How to visualize thousands of stock images of AI
Together with Dario Rodighiero (Harvard MetaLab), we have started a project on the stock imagery of AI. Dario has scraped circa 7,500 images of AI from Shutterstock using Shutterscrape (https://github.com/chuanenlin/shutterscrape) and visualized them with Yale DHLab’s PixPlot (https://github.com/YaleDHLab/pix-plot). You can check the results here: https://rodighiero.github.io/AI-Imaginary/#. We are also collaborating with Marta Severo (Paris Nanterre) and Olivier Buisson (Inathèque), by testing for instance on our corpus the algorithm Snoop (https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02096036). The first results of this project have been presented in French at the conference “Que font les images de l’IA?” (Strasbourg 15 and 16 April 2021). The next presentations are at the SPT (Society for Philosophy and Technology) and 4S (Society for Social Studies of Science) online conferences in June and September.
